University Is Not What You Think It Is

In our recent interview with Baktash Hamzehloo, a senior aerospace engineer, one idea stood out—and it reframes how most students see university.

"University teaches you how to learn."

That might sound simple, but it's often misunderstood. Many students approach school as a checklist: pass exams, get a good GPA, graduate, then figure out the rest later.

But according to the interview, that mindset misses the real value entirely.

The Real Skill You're Supposed to Build

When we asked what makes students successful long-term, the answer wasn't grades or even internships.

It was the ability to learn independently.

As he explained, university builds three critical things:

• A foundation to understand complex ideas
• The ability to learn new concepts faster
• And most importantly, knowing where to find answers when you don't know something

Research in education and career development supports this: students who develop strong learning strategies adapt faster in their first entry-level job, especially in fast-changing industries.

The Problem Most Students Don't Notice

Here's where things start to break.

Many students focus on memorizing formulas, completing assignments, and passing exams—but never fully understand what they're learning.

And there's a simple test:

If you can't explain a concept in simple terms, you probably don't understand it.

That gap doesn't show up in grades—but it shows up in interviews, internships, and your first job after graduation.
